Woord van de dag: spoed

I love this word: 'spoed'.

It just sounds great! Don't forget though that this is pronounced more like 'oo' than in English 'oe'.

It's also quite relevant as we went past a hospital the other day and one of my children asked… what does 'spoed' mean? (It was written 'spoedgevallen' on the sign).

Spoed or spoedgevallendienst is in fact A&E or Casualty in English.

Dutch online learning resource

Found a neat online language learning resource called Linguistadores which helps you study a language through news articles, videos and music. Its online quick reference dictionary and user defined flashcard system are very cool.

Currently it seems free and I can see very few drawbacks (if any!).

The company says this about itself' "We've built a platform which helps people achieve their ambitions by mastering a language in a way that is satisfying, relevant today, and customized to who they are today and who they want to be. Our technology and technological roadmap is focused on sewing the language learning process into the routines, activities, and pursuits of daily life in the form of genuine foreign language content (articles, music, and videos)."

Met het CVO op stap in Antwerpen!

A small advert for the language school I attend and the day trip they organised to Antwerp. Written by yours truly with small corrections by a teacher from the school.. "Een paar schoonheidsfoutjes".

Here's the plug for the school which is called CVO BEC.

Het was een vroege start, maar dit werd verzacht door de koffie die we kregen en die inbegrepen in de prijs van de dagtocht was. Na de koffie namen we de trein direct naar Antwerpen en kwamen we aan met de hele dag voor ons.

Onze eerste stop was ... nog een koffie! Dit keer was het bij de Radisson Blu dat tegenover het station is en waarvan de postmoderne architectuur de vorm van het station weerspiegelt .
De organisatoren van de reis gaven ons genoeg tijd om onszelf op te frissen en dan waren we opnieuw weg! Dit keer liepen we terug naar het station om onze gids te vinden. Daarna vertrokken we direct voor een 2 uur durende wandeltocht rond Antwerpen. We zagen interessante historische
gebouwen op onze weg en onze gids was uiteraard deskundig en trots op zijn geboortestad. Dus was het een charmante wandeling die op de Grote Markt eindigde.

Na een korte lunch kwamen we in de Red Star Line museum samen waar we onze volgende gids ontmoetten. Deze keer bezochten we een Antwerpen van lang geleden. Het bezoek werd levendig gebracht door onze aangename gids. Ze vertelde een verhaal over mensen die uit heel Europa naar Antwerpen reisden om een boot te nemen naar Noord-Amerika en daar een nieuw leven te beginnen De gids en het museum bezorgen inderdaad een interessante verhaal maar meer dan dit, heeft de gids een vergelijking met het verhaal van het hedendaagse multiculturele Antwerpen gemaakt.
Het bezoek was interessant en inspirerend.

Daarna waren we vrij om Antwerpen te ontdekken hoe we wilden. Mijn vriend en ik had geen aarzeling om de beste Antwerpse bars te vinden en enkele speciale bieren te ontdekken.
Nadien gingen we terug naar het station. De groep was stipt op tijd en met een zetel in de trein gegarandeerd, waren we weer terug in Brussel op het aangekondigde tijdstip. Ik kijk nu uit naar de volgende georganiseerde CVO BEC dagtrip .... Waar gaan we heen?
